Since the war in Ukraine began, my prayers have been for the Ukrainian people. With all the political ramifications and promises, peace seemed so far away. The ongoing destruction of one’s homeland, homes and businesses, beautiful, serene areas turned into rubble, must be so very devastating.
In 2024, I entered Sacajawea into the ViZ Film Fest in Odessa, Ukraine. I was drawn to the festival because my heart was truly aching for these people and I felt Sacajawea needed to be represented there. I was very happy when her story became an Official Selection of the festival.
After that, I didn’t hear anything else about the festival, and I wondered how Odessa was affected by the war. As time went by, it was now 2025. The war raged on, the people suffered, much of the homeland was destroyed, families were dying, children were starving – and, of course, the festival was not taking place…
Yesterday, my heart was filled to overflowing when these words came in an email. “The past period has been challenging for us, and we truly appreciate your patience and understanding. Despite the difficulties, we remained committed to honoring the filmmakers who entrusted us with their work. We are proud to announce that you are a Winner of V.i.Z. Film Fest (Best Feature Script). Among many outstanding projects, it was incredibly difficult for our judges to select the best. Your project, Sacajawea, The Windcatcher, stood out for its artistic strength, vision, and cinematic excellence are truly the best of the best.”
Sacajawea, a Shoshone woman from 1800, experienced great tragedy in her life, death of loved ones, kidnapping, abuse, starvation, disappointment and loss, yet she still stands tall with us today through her story. I am just so very grateful and humbled that the Ukrainian festival, in the midst of their pain, saw her light, and gave this cherished award to Sacajawea, The Windcatcher.
There’s a light that is always shining, even in the darkest place. This award is a bright, shining star for this production.
Only Love is the answer for the world.
